Grows in the area between the saw-kelp and bladderwrack. It appears far inside the fjords, but is missing in fragile places. The algae has a leather like tissue and consists of up to 2m long yellow-brown sprouts that extends from a flat stem. Oval float branches with 5-10 cm spacing. A new bladder is formed every spring. The age can therefore be determined by counting the number of blisters upwards (the bottom, ie the first bladder is formed in the 3rd year). Along the edge of the flat sprouts, many new small branches pops up (tentacles). At the tip of these, gender cells developes in April-June the next year.
The Norwegian name «grisetang» /pig-kelp refers to the use of the kelp as a pig feed. From ancient times the kelp has been collected and used as animal feed and as fertilizer in private gardens and in organic farming. Kelp forms the base for the Norwegian production of seaweed-flour and seaweed extracts.
